Happy Birthday… and apologies

September 10th, 2009

I might be a bit late, but today is when Gunpei Yokoi’s birthday would have been, and I thought that I should at least try and post something… I haven’t been doing anything with this site since the last update and I feel pretty bad for neglecting things, but I have at least found out some things recently that I hope to cover on the site, including a game that I forgot to put on here, and an apparent comic that someone is making about him. (Here, though the background is not safe for work)

Hopefully I can try and start updating this site more soon…

Gunpei Yokoi Papercraft

Kinda reminds me of Wind Waker, actually.

Kinda reminds me of Wind Waker, actually.

Raccoon Sam, a friend of mine, created a Gunpei Yokoi papercraft of all things to celebrate his birthday. I have yet to be able to print it out to get a real life preview picture, though. I repackaged the papercraft myself with a fixed text file, though he may have updated it after this version. Some more previews after the cut.

Welcome to the new Gunpei Yokoi in Credits!

September 10th, 2008

Right now it’s late, and the site is far from perfect on this new blog style. However, I had planned to finish this site by today, September 10th, 2008, what would have been Gunpei Yokoi’s 67th birthday. I thought this could be the least I could do. Expect more updates soon, besides the one that will come right after this, and perhaps a name change to account for the new style. I apologize ahead of time if the page seems to break up oddly… I’m not sure why it does that.

I might decide to separate the photos into different pages. For now, here’s the page as it was on the original site.

References on X-Play

September 1st, 2008

X-Play has made a few references to Gunpei Yokoi before, I’ve only documented two of them so far, one on the Breakfast Club parody, and throughout the review of Gunpey DS. I have a feeling there were more mentions, but these are the only ones I’ve remembered and have links to. Picture and quote of the Breakfast Club scene after the cut.

Stage 3-1

August 26th, 2008

The Myspace band Stage 3-1 has Gunpei Yokoi in the icon for their namesake song(listed in the player without the -). Incidentally, ROB appears in the icon for 8 Bit Battle. Outside of JUP Castle, those are the only songs in the player that are not clearly labeled remixes of video game songs.

SEGA Fantasy VI

August 26th, 2008

SEGA Fantasy VI is a recreation of the ending of Final Fantasy VI(originally called Final Fantasy III in the US) with game consoles. Gunpei Yokoi is briefly mentioned, though slightly mistranslated as “Gunpey”, the game that also makes a cameo earlier in the movie. Several other games and consoles related to him appear or are referenced too.

It’s available in the original Japanese version and a translation to English. I couldn’t manage to find wherever the original English upload was, though. Pictures of the “Gunpey” scene after the break.

Philosophy of Nintendo Biography

Philosophy of Nintendo(Japanese)

This website features many little known details on Gunpei Yokoi’s life before he joined Nintendo. There also seems to be randomly scattered bits of modern Japanese history, even though I’m pretty sure I heard that where he was born put him out of the way of wars and such. Perhaps it’s to compare what was happening at that time. Google’s translator also throws in a lot of “I”s where I think “he”s are supposed to be.

It’d be nice if someone could provide a better translation of some of these things, though.
